اردوگاه آشویتس (به آلمانی: Auschwitz) در نوع خود از بزرگترین اردوگاه‌های ساخته شده توسط رژیم نازی بود. مجموعه شامل سه اردوگاه اصلی می‌شد که در همه آنها میلیون‌ها اسیر اکثرا یهودی به کار اجباری گماشته می‌شدند.بین ۱٫۱ تا ۱٫۵ میلیون نفر که ۹۰٪ آنان را یهودیان تشکیل می‌دادند جان خود را دراین اردو گاه از دست دادند.علاوه بریهودیان ۸۳ هزار لهستانی و ۱۹ هزار نفر از کولی ها نیز از جان باختگان این اردوگاه بودند.این اردوگاه به منظور نسل کشی هدفمند در طول جنگ جهانی ساخته شد.[۲] اردوگاه آشویتس تقریباً در ۳۷ مایلی غرب کراکوف، نزدیک به مرز آلمان- لهستان (پیش از جنگ) در سیلسیا قرار داشتند- منطقه‌ای که آلمان نازی بعد از تهاجم و غلبه بر لهستان در ۱۹۳۹ ضمیمه خاک خود کرد.
در سال ۱۹۴۰ اردوگاهی در کنار شهر کوچکی در لهستان به نام اوشفین چیم، که به زبان آلمانی آن را آشویتس می‌گفتند، برای نگهداری زندانیان غیرنظامی لهستانی- مثل سیاست‌مداران، دانشگاهیان، متخصصان و کشیش‌ها ایجاد شد.

Surprising Beginnings
This episode sets the stage for the series and examines the radical increase in violence against all opponents of the Nazi state. In particular, it explores the German army's invasion of the Soviet Union during the summer of 1941 and connects this campaign to the first gassing experiments in Auschwitz, Poland, which were aimed at Russian prisoners of war, not Jews.

Frenzied Killing
SS Lieutenant Colonel Adolf Eichmann ordered the deportation of Hungary's Jews following occupation in 1944, precipitating the most intensive period of slaughter in Aushwitz's history. The Allies, meanwhile, faced dilemmas: should they divert valuable resources to bomb transport routes to the camp? And should they consider Eichmann's offer of one million Jewish lives in exchange for certain provisions - the "Blood for Goods" deal?
Liberation and Revenge
The reality of life in the concentration camps was revealed upon the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau and Bergen-Belsen in 1945. But what was the fate of the remaining prisoners and the SS garrisons?
